Child Smile is another policy that the NHS has brought out to improve dental health over Scotland and also to tackle the health inequalities that people are facing. The program is split into three elements:
• Child smile core: implemented in nurseries/schools, where children are encouraged to brush their teeth every day. Throughout this initiative there is also free toothbrushes and toothpaste given to children under 5.
• Child smile nursery/school: Use of a fluoride varnish for children’s teeth, to act as a preventative to tooth decay and look after the milk teeth.
• Child smile practice: Planned to urge the family to take their children to the dentist, the health visitor refers them to a dental practice or a Dental Health Support Worker (DHSW) if home support is needed.
