In 2016 season, JOHOR DARUL TA’ZIM FC (JDT) have officially came under the ownership of HRH Tunku Ismail in a statement released by Johor FA dated 10 January 2016. It further clarifies that JDT are now turned into a full-fledged professional outfit, as a separate entity from the Johor FA which organises the overall football development programme in the state. As the JDT owner, HRH Tunku Ismail is being directly involved in the decision-making process and club management, compared to his previous role as the Royal Patron of Johor FA, when he provided directions and counsel. A day later, former Johor striker who was a key member of the historic double-champion team of 1991, Alistair Edwards has been appointed as JDT’s Sporting Director to assist HRH Tunku Ismail. The move was seen as a part of the privatisation process and a strategic initiative on how Malaysia football clubs should be run and managed professionally including the youth development in the region.
Shortly after, on 12 January 2016, Sultan of Johor, HRH Sultan Ibrahim Almarhum Sultan Iskandar decided to give RM50 million as a reward to the club. After the successful 2015 season, when the club have won the Super League, Piala Sumbangsih, and AFC Cup, Sultan Ibrahim made the decision to contribute RM50 million as he was satisfied with how football in the state has united the citizens of Johor and put the state’s name on the map.
In an interview published on the club’s social media in early December 2016, the majority shareholder in the club is HRH Tunku Ismail himself, who holds 70% of the southern based club. 30% of the club belongs to Royal Football Fund, which invests in several football clubs around the world.
As a part of restructuring process, the club made an unexpected announcement by naming Luciano Figueroa as the new Sporting Director. His responsibility and focus will be on the first team and to assist the head coach, Ulisses Morais. Meanwhile, the previous position holder, Alistair Edwards has been reassigned as the new Technical Director and will be responsible to oversee all JDT development and grassroot programmes.
Interpersonal roles involve interactions and relationships with orgazational members and other constituents. The three interpersonal roles played by the manager are figurehead, leader, and liaison. As a figurehead, Tunku Ismail had attend to give a talk at World Football Summit on November 2016 because of the ability to bring JDT with excellent achievements. As a leader for JDT, he had leads, coordinating and motivate all the workers to do the right thing to ensure the planning the club is on the track. As a liaison Tunku Ismail had ensure that his networking either in and out of the organization is in a good relation. As an example, he had been training with the player, make a question and answer with the supporter and make a deal with club sponsor.
Informational roles means the managers responsibility for gathering and disseminating to the stakeholders of the organization. Informational roles include monitor, disseminator and spokeperson. As a monitor, Tunku Ismail finding and receive information such as oppurtunities and threats in the organization. As the owner of the club, he wanted to generate income with investor and create harmony environment in the organization. Disseminator, Tunku Ismail will distribute important information to the organization such as the target that he want to achieve on that year. Tunku Ismail had announce to the club and public that a new world class stadium will build for JDT and will be an iconic stadium for Johor. As a result, many people had invest to be a part from this project.
Decisional roles means managers process information and reach conclusions. Information in and of itself is nearly meaningless if it is not used to make organizational nearly meaningless if it not used to make organizational decisions. Managers make those decisions. They commit their work groups to course of action and allocate resources so that group plans can be implemented. Decisional roles include entrepreneur, disturbance handler, resource allocator and negotiator. Role as an entrepreneur Tunku Ismail will be the initiator to create an innovation. Example of innovation that he had create is selling merchandise with the brand of JDT to supporters. With than initiative, the team could generate more income to organization. Disturbance handler means that Tunku Ismail will make an action towards the conflict occur in the organization to ensure that they will harmony team. It is important for JDT to build a strong and quality team and quality management. Lastly as a negotiator, Tunku Ismail will negotiate with the employees, sponsorship, customers or other work group. The main reason he to be the negotiator is to make they clear and can fulfil what the target that the organization wanted.
Conceptual skill means the ability to see the organization as a whole and integrate the relationship between the parts within the organization. It involving strategic planning and management processes to achieve organizational goals involving complex decisions involving long-term effects. Conceptual skills are extremely important for leadership positions, particularly upper- and middle-management jobs.
Managers need to make sure everyone working for them is helping to achieve the company’s larger goals. Rather than just getting bogged down in the details of day-to-day operations, upper- and middle-managers also need to keep the company’s “big pictures” aims in mind. However, conceptual skills are useful for almost every position. Even when you have a very specific list of duties, it is always helpful to know how your part fits into the larger goals of your organization.
Tunku Ismail as the top manager needs to have the skills in conceptual as it is important in making strategic planning and management. Conceptual skills are the dominant skills that must be present in themselves as owners of the organization. Any complex decisions involving long-term effects should be decided by him to avoid any mistakes or losses in the future. Thus, this skill is important in determining the direction of the organization. One of the steps he has undertaken through this conceptual skill is by planning a world-class football facility construction for his club in the future. With a detailed study, he decided the facility would be built near the new stadium being built at Iskandar Puteri. In addition, the construction of the stadium is also complicated because of the huge cost of RM450 million. However, at a great cost. Tunku Ismail believes his team will have a huge return in the future.
Humanity skills are to lead, motivate, manage conflict and influence individuals by understanding the feelings, behaviors and attitudes of other individuals. The ability to communicate with various groups of people or communities such as meeting various types of customers, meeting with top officials, discussing and communicating with employees.
In humanity skills, Tunku Ismail needs to motivate workers and manage conflicts. However, these skills need not be fully mastered as these skills are further dominated by middle management. But Tunku Ismail has also used this skill in managing its organization. For example, he motivates his employees with an acceptable reward if they win the super league of malaysia and other competitions. He also took a quick step when conflict between players and management conflicts. Among the drastic steps that have been made is to discontinue the contract of players who are in tension in the team. It aims to maintain harmony in the team.
Technical skills are the ability to apply methods, procedures and techniques in a particular field. This skill is closely related to the organization’s daily activities. The mastery of technical skills helps top management to formulate policies, policies and objectives of the organization. Additionally, it can help subordinates managers provide advice, clarification and tutoring on technical aspects in detail to employees. In technical skills, Tunku Ismail does not have to fully master this skill as this skill involves subordinate managers in applying methods, procedures and techniques in certain areas.
PLANNING, ORGANIZING, LEADING, CONTROLLING
In my opinion, Planning, Organizing, Leading, Controlling (POLC) is crucial in helping managers in managing organizations effectively as they can facilitate organizational planning. In planning, the manager will determine the goals to be achieved and determine the most appropriate action to take at all levels of the organization to ensure the organization achieves its goals. For example, Tunku Ismail plans to expand the merchandise sales market to the Asian market. Therefore, he needs to make long, medium and short plans in order to expand his market.
By making a well-organized and well-planned plan, all planning can be done perfectly. Planning is important in determining the direction of the company. It can help the manager determine goals, working groups and develop a comprehensive star rating to achieve goals. Managers can also distribute sources more effectively and efficiently. Additionally, planning will be a benchmark for achieving the objectives. By planning, it is possible to set the benchmark to be achieved. Furthermore, managers can identify opportunities and problems that will be encountered in achieving organizational goals.
Organizing is a process whereby managers organize and distribute organizational resources to fulfill their assigned tasks in order to achieve organizational goals efficiently and effectively. By organizing, a systematic workforce can be done in implementing the company’s goals. In addition, the distribution of resources within the organization can be done fairly and equitably. Every direction and task directed by an individual can be channeled to another person more accurately. It is important to ensure that every individual within the organization does not miss and get clear information from each given instruction.
The third basic managerial function is leading. The skills of influencing people for a particular purpose or reason is called leading. Leading is considered to be the most important and challenging of all managerial activities. Leading is influencing or prompting the member of the organization to work together with the interest of the organization. By exercising leadership, managers can get closer to the organization as well as know the problems they face in the organization. Through leadership, one can influence his organization and can create the spirit of cooperation between them and the opportunity to achieve goals is brighter. Various leadership styles that can be practiced by managers such as autocratic, democratic, lassez-faire and islamic.
Finally, controls are a process of monitoring performance and action taken to ensure that the results are achieved as expected to achieve organizational goals. In my view, control is important for measuring organizational performance. By exercising control, every work done can be corrected in case of any problems. Leaders can make sure the desired results can be achieved. Furthermore, through control it can motivate employees to work effectively and efficiently. Regular controls can also help leaders find mistakes in achieving goals.
